Our workshop in Jepara, Central Java
Our Story
Born in the Forests of Java
Deep in the workshops of Central Java, where teak forests have shaped a culture of craftsmanship for centuries, Javanti Kayu was born.
The name means teak wood in Javanese.
Every cutting board begins as a single plank of reclaimed teak: dense, oil-rich, and impossibly beautiful. Our artisans hand-cut each piece against the grain, exposing the end-grain pattern that gives these boards their strength and their soul.
No two boards are the same. The grain that emerges when the wood is cut is as unique as a fingerprint shaped by decades of growth, sun, and rain in the Indonesian archipelago.
The Process
How Every Board is Born
From a living tree to your kitchen. All handmade. No mass production.
Teak Selection
We source only Plantation Certified teak from Perum Perhutani. These are government regulated plantations and is FSC Certified. Wood is slowly baked for weeks.
End Grain Cutting
Planks are cross-cut to expose the end grain: the face of the wood that is hardest, most knife-friendly, and most beautiful. This technique, known to Indonesian craftsmen for generations, is what sets our boards apart.
Hand Assembly
Individual end-grain pieces are arranged by eye. Each artisan composing the mosaic pattern unique to that board. They are then glued, clamped, and left to cure for weeks.
Sanding & Oil Finishing
The board is sanded with precision until the surface is completely smooth. Multiple coats of natural oil and beeswax are hand-rubbed into the surface over days. The result is a board that repels moisture, resists bacteria, and only grows more beautiful with use.

Common Questions
Everything You Need to Know
Still have questions? We are always happy to help.
Our teak is responsibly harvested from sustainable plantations in Java, Indonesia. Specifically, we only source from Perum Perhutani which are government managed plantations.
Yes, we use only sustainably managed Indonesian teak and follow ethical sourcing practices. All Perum Perhutani wood is FSC Certified. However, due to the nature of small artisans it has been difficult to obtain FSC Certification for our brand. We are actively trying to certify our brand!
Every single piece is handmade by artisan families in Central and East Java, Indonesia. When you register your board on our website, we tell you exactly which artisan made it. No factories, no automation.
Teak is one of the densest, most oil-rich hardwoods on earth. Its natural silica content makes it highly resistant to moisture, bacteria, and warping — all critical properties for a cutting board. Combined with end grain construction, which lets knife edges slide between wood fibres rather than cutting across them, our boards are among the most knife-friendly surfaces you can use.
The opposite. End grain boards are the gentlest surface for knife edges because the blade enters the wood parallel to the fibres rather than slicing across them. This self-healing property means your knives stay sharper for longer compared to plastic, glass, or even face-grain wood boards.
Yes. All Javanti Kayu boards come with a lifetime craftsmanship guarantee. If your board develops a structural defect due to a manufacturing issue, we will replace it. We also offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee — if you are not happy with your purchase for any reason, contact us and we will make it right.
Yes. Both faces of the board are end grain and fully usable. Some customers prefer to designate one side for meat and one for produce, though the natural antimicrobial properties of teak mean cross-contamination risk is already lower than with other materials.
