Solid Indonesian teak, and nothing else. Every board is cut, assembled and finished by hand in Jepara on the north coast of Java, by the workshop we have worked with from the start.

On an end grain board the wood fibres stand upright, so the blade parts them rather than cutting across them. Knife edges stay sharper for longer and the surface closes back over its own marks.

It is also far more work. Dozens of small blocks are cut, turned, glued, planed and sanded to make one board, which is why an end grain board sits above a plain face grain board on price.

Large is 17.5 x 11.5 x 1.2 in (45 x 30 x 3 cm) and covers everyday prep. X-Large is 23.5 x 15.7 x 1.5 in (60 x 40 x 4 cm), thicker and considerably heavier, for a big counter and for cooks who want the board to stay exactly where they put it.

Water hyacinth, braided by hand over a hidden steel frame. The frame is what holds the shape square after years on a shelf. The weave is done one basket at a time, never by machine.

Close, but not identical. Teak grain and hyacinth colour shift from piece to piece, and those small differences in tone and pattern are what tells you it was made by hand rather than pressed out of a mould.

Hand wash only. Mild soap, warm water, a rinse, then dry it straight away with a cloth and let it air for a few minutes.

Never put it in the dishwasher and never leave it soaking. Both will warp the wood and open the joints.

Every two to four weeks, more often if you cook on it daily. A thin coat of food-safe mineral oil or a board conditioner with beeswax on every side, twenty minutes to soak in, then wipe away what is left. When the surface looks dry or feels rough, it is time again.

Skip vegetable oils such as olive, canola or coconut. They turn rancid and leave a sour smell in the wood.

Sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda over the surface and scrub with half a lemon. The acid breaks down the stain and the salt does the scrubbing. Rinse well and dry immediately.

Sand it gently with 220 grit or finer until it is smooth again, then oil it and let that soak in fully before the next use. An end grain board can take this many times over its life.

Wipe with a dry cloth. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and let it air dry. Do not soak them, and do not leave them standing in water.

No, but standing a board upright between uses lets both faces dry evenly. The Solo Stand takes a board up to 2.4 in thick and is rated to 30 lb. The Duo Stand holds two boards up to 1.3 in each, which fits the Large but not the X-Large.

Ready stock ships from a third party warehouse in the United States. Custom and special pieces are sent directly from our warehouse in Indonesia.

If it has not been dispatched, yes. Email support@javanti-kayu.com with your order number as soon as you can and we will catch it if it is still in the warehouse.

Thirty days from the day the piece reaches you. It has to come back unused, in its original packaging, with proof of purchase. Email support@javanti-kayu.com to start a return and, if it is accepted, we send you a shipping label and instructions.

Anything posted back without requesting a return first cannot be accepted. Custom pieces and sale items are not returnable. Full terms are in the refund policy.

Tell us straight away, through the chat on the site, the contact form, or by email. Photographs help. We investigate and send a replacement.

Return the one you have, and once the return is accepted place a separate order for the size you want. It is faster than a swap and it keeps the new piece moving while the first one travels.
