Look closer

Every detail, by hand Nothing glued on.

The same braid, the same steel frame, in the four sizes that cover a shelf, a closet and a pantry.

Handwoven water hyacinth rectangular storage basket with cutout handles

01

Hand-braided weave

Water hyacinth is cut, dried in the sun and braided into a thick double strand, then woven course by course.

02

Built-in handles

The handles are cut into both short ends and bound with the same cord, so there is nothing stitched on to pull loose.

03

Hidden steel frame

A steel frame runs inside the rim and down the corners. It is what keeps the sides square when the basket is full.

04

Riveted leather patch

A vegetable tanned leather patch, set with four brass rivets rather than glued on.

Where it goes

One basket, a room at a time.

Medium basket on a pantry shelf holding dry goods beside storage jars
Medium basket in a wardrobe holding folded knitwear
Small basket on a bathroom counter with folded white towels
Mid basket on a desk beside a laptop and notebooks

Pantry

Dry goods, in view

Deep enough for bags and boxes, open enough to see what is left without pulling it down.

  • Pasta, rice and grain bags
  • Tins and jars

Closet

Folded, not stacked

Knitwear keeps its shape better standing in a basket than pressed under a pile.

  • Six to eight folded jumpers
  • Scarves and gloves

Bathroom

Counter and cabinet

The smaller sizes fit a vanity shelf; the long one sits flat on a cistern.

  • Rolled hand towels
  • Three spare rolls in the Long

Desk

The paper pile, contained

Mid is the height that hides a stack of notebooks without hiding the desk.

  • Notebooks and folders
  • Cables and chargers

Water hyacinth, braided by hand

The material

Water hyacinth, braided by hand

Water hyacinth grows fast and thick across the wetlands around Yogyakarta. The stems are cut by hand, then braided into the thick double strand you can see running across the surface of every basket.

100% water hyacinth, no plastic cord
Woven over a steel frame

The frame

Woven over a steel frame

Each basket is formed around a steel frame, course by course, and the rim is bound over the top of it with a paler cord. That frame is what keeps the sides square when the basket is full and lifted down.

Steel inside the rim and the corners
Washed clean, one at a time

Washing

Washed clean, one at a time

Once woven, every basket is washed by hand to take out the dust of the workshop before it goes out to dry.

1 basket at a time, start to finish
Sun dried in the yard

Drying

Sun dried in the yard

The baskets dry in the open air until the moisture is out of them and the colour settles into that pale wheat and caramel range. Nothing is force dried, which is why the tone varies a little from batch to batch.

Before you order

Questions, answered plainly.

Which size should I start with?

Medium is the one most people buy first: it takes folded blankets, pantry goods or a closet shelf. Small suits cube shelving, Mid suits a desk or kitchen shelf, and Long is the one for a cistern or a narrow ledge.

Do the sizes stack?

They nest when empty and sit level side by side on a shelf, but they are not designed to stack loaded on top of each other.

Why does the size vary slightly?

Every basket is woven by hand, so measurements can differ by up to a quarter of an inch and no two weaves are identical. If you are fitting a tight space, measure with that quarter inch in mind.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a dry cloth. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and let it dry in the air. Do not soak it and do not put it in a machine.

What is it made of?

Water hyacinth, harvested from the wetlands around Yogyakarta, dried in the sun and woven over a steel frame. The rim is bound with cord and the label is vegetable tanned leather on brass rivets.

Who makes them?

Women artisans in Indonesia, weaving one basket at a time. The weave, the rim binding and the riveting are all done by hand.
