Care Guide
Simple rituals.
A board that lasts forever.
Your board arrives pre-oiled and ready to use. Follow these habits and it will only get better with age.
Before First Use
Unboxing your board
A quick prep before your first chop sets the board up for years of great use.
Rinse with mild soap & warm water
Give it a quick wash to remove any residue from packaging. No need to scrub, just a gentle rinse.
Dry completely with a cloth
Pat it dry, then let it air out for a few minutes. This step matters more than it sounds — moisture is the main enemy of wood.
Apply a thin layer of food-safe mineral oil
Or a dedicated board oil. Let it soak in for around 20 minutes, then wipe away the excess. You're done.
Day to Day
Daily care
Do this
- Hand wash only. Mild soap, warm water, then rinse and dry immediately after each use.
- Store the board upright so air can circulate and moisture can escape between uses.
- Keep it in a low-moisture spot with good airflow. High humidity raises the risk of warping over time.
Avoid this
- No soaking and no dishwasher, ever. Both will cause the wood to warp, crack, and split at the joints.
- Don't leave it sitting in water. Even briefly, this can cause instant warping.
- Keep it away from prolonged heat or direct sunlight. No stoves, no sunny windowsills, no hot cars.
Every 2 to 4 Weeks
Oiling your board
Wood needs hydration just like anything else. A regular oil treatment keeps the fibres from drying out, prevents micro-cracks, and deepens the board's natural colour over time. The more you use it, the more often it needs it.
Apply a thin coat to all sides, let it soak in for around 20 minutes, then wipe away the excess with a clean cloth. Once the surface looks dry or feels rough to the touch, it's time to oil again.
Oiling every 2 to 4 weeks is a good starting point. Boards that see daily use will benefit from more frequent conditioning.
Use this
Food-safe mineral oil, or a board conditioner with beeswax.
Not this
Vegetable oils like olive, canola, or coconut. They go rancid over time and can leave a sour smell in the wood.
When Needed
Deep clean & retouch
Odors & stains
Sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda over the surface, then scrub with half a lemon. The acid breaks down stains and the salt acts as a gentle abrasive. Rinse well and dry immediately after.
Rough surface or knife marks
If the surface feels rough or has developed deep knife marks, use fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit or higher) to gently smooth it out. Follow up with a fresh coat of oil and let it absorb fully before using the board again.
This care guide also comes as a fridge magnet inside the box, so it's always within reach in your kitchen.
